ABOUT

About AR2008

Animal Rights 2008 is the U.S. animal rights movement's annual national conference. It is also the world's largest & oldest animal rights gathering, hailing back to 1981.

Animal Rights 2008 is a forum for sharing knowledge, reporting on progress, discussing strategies and tactics, networking, and "recharging our batteries."

Animal Rights 2008 brings our movement together under the banner of animal liberation from all forms of human oppression. All viewpoints that support this goal are welcome (except for advocacy of injury).

Animal Rights 2008 reflects America's continuing concern with terror. Indeed, it is dedicated to exposing and challenging the terror perpetrated every day against billions of innocent, sentient nonhuman animals.

The AR Conferences have been organized by FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement) since 1981 with some breaks between 1987 and 2000, then every year since 2000. To reach a greater number of people, the conference now alternates between Washington, DC, on even years, and Los Angeles, CA, on odd years.

About FARM

FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, public-interest organization advocating plant-based (vegan) diets to save animals, protect the environment, and improve health. We operate from the nation's capital and work through a network of volunteer activists in all 50 states and two dozen other countries.

Since our inception in 1976 and official formation in 1981, FARM has launched a variety of ongoing grassroots campaigns in pursuit of our mission: World Farm Animals Day (1983), Great American Meatout (1985), Letters From FARM (1988), Gentle Thanksgiving (1992), Sabina Fund (1999), Global Hunger Solutions (2005), Equal Justice Alliance (2006), and Bite Global Warming (2007).

"Due to a variety of reasons, I found myself enjoying AR2007 even more than I did the previous three.  One of the reasons is that the networking is cumulative, and expands with every passing year.  All the people I meet are the most enlightened of our societies, and high quality participants make a high quality conference.  Being a Canadian, I now truly feel the sense of belonging as an integral part of the American AR movement, and the AR conference has played no small part in this integration." - Anthony Marr, HOPE-CARE Foundation

"I just wanted to say thank you again for inviting me to be a part of AR2007. I met some amazing new activists and left reinvigorated, which is always the strongest point, for me personally, about the conferences. I'm sure the conference was quite stressful for the organizers, but it ran very smoothly, and you all did an excellent job." - Will Potter, Green is the New Red

"Thank you very much Alex for holding such an amazing space for everyone in the movement, from one end to the other, to come together and share experiences, ideals and make plans for action. I was honored to be a part of something that went beyond personalities and politics, where the animals that we are all here to defend and guard from harm came first!" - Kari Bagnall, Jungle Friends

"Thank you for a very wonderful conference.  I appreciated everything about it.  After the session on Engaging Youth, 3-4 people came up to speak with me about the course that I teach on Animals and Ethics.  I was able to give them some help on how to go about getting such a course approved by a Philosophy Department at their local college or university." - George Matejka, Ursuline College

"I am grateful and honored for the privilege to be a part of something so important to our society and culture.  I want to thank you for putting on such an amazing event, and for changing our earth, and please count me in for next year." - Cheri Thompson, Healing Species

"Congratulations on organizing such a successful and interesting Conference. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at AR2007 and I certainly learned a lot about the myriad of issues which the animal rights movement is addressing. It was invigorating to be surrounded by such vibrant and enthusiastic people. It was wonderful to be able to bring a unique Australian perspective to the panels and I hope other delegates benefited from the presentations." - Emma Bull, Voiceless (Australia)
