Presenters: Lawson, Muller, Vincent
What works and what doesn't in our efforts to protect wild animals?
Greg Lawson, a National Park
Service Ranger, will explore federal laws
protecting wildlife and the federal agencies who
fail to follow those laws. Why have
the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service,
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other federal
agencies abandoned their mission statements when
it comes to wildlife protection? He will
examine current legislative efforts, direct action
and education as methods of change.

Peter Muller, President of the League of Humane Voters, will discuss considering abundant wildlife an economic asset that can be used for the benefit of the community by setting up wildlife watching parks. A proposal to use the herd of Seneca white deer at the Seneca Depot in NY in a canned hunt operation has been politically defeated by wildlife advocates. Peter will give an insight into how that was accomplished and the steps that are now being taken to establish a wildlife watching park at the site.

Brian Vincent, Communications Director with Big Wildlife, will provide tips about how to fight federal and state wildlife lethal control programs, build support for wildlife at the local level, and promote to local communities the use of non-lethal measures to help avoid conflicts with wildlife. He will also focus on the federal agency Wildlife Services, a branch of the USDA that kills over a million wild animals each year.
